For All Immigrants, By An Immigrant

Swedish Immigrant 1902:
In America they gave you good land for nothing, and in two years you could be a rich man; and no one had to go in the army unless they wanted to. That was what my uncle told us.

Italian Immigrant 1902:
Now and then I had heard things about America that it was a far off country where everybody was rich and where Italians went and made plenty of money so that they could return to Italy and live in pleasure. poe day I met a young man who pulled out a handful of gold and told me he had made that in America in only a few days.

Chinese Immigrant 1902:
The Americans would not dare to treat Germans, English, Italians or even Japanese as they treat the Chinese, because if they did there would be a war.

Controversy has surrounded immigration topics in times of war, want, and need. As America's economic and political supremacy has begun to wane, there are cries for stricter regulation on immigration. Amidst the deliberations of politicians and pundits, immigrants have continued to come to our soil to work and to build. These are our foreign borns.

———————————————————————————————————————————

The Immigrant's Way begins with the history of immigrants from all parts of the globe coming to America over the course of the past millennium, along with the geopolitical, social, and economic factors which inspired people to seek opportunity in a new land. Margaret Wong describes and connects the legacy of immigration to the United States with concurrent shifts in legislative policy during different eras of American history, while relating her own story and allowing readers to more fully understand the context behind American immigration policy and reform.

In the second portion of the book, Margaret Wong guides readers through different nuances and changes in immigration law and provides an overview of what it takes to become an American in the 21st century.

While of interest to the American reader seeking to become better informed about U.S. immigration law and history, this book also provides current, prospective, and future immigrants with practical information on how to obtain a visa to visit the United States, secure a green card, decide whether to become a U.S. citizen, and ultimately achieve the goal of citizenship.
